(@B :Ё _ф  ё╞└  0 ЪSTRSPLC О2&MCLDMCLD┤2╢PL PL j4HBible Approach to Handle Complaints One of the wonderful joys of being involved in leadership within the church is the privilege of getting to handle complaints. While some complaints are totally unfounded others have merit and should be heard. Some complaints are just people working through their own discomfort and will amount to little conflict while other complaints are meant to sting, wound, and hurt with no desire to bring resolution. Our responsibility as leaders within the church is to sift through the sea of complaints and by the Holy Spirit s guidance learn how to handle them thus we desire to present this document to the Local Church. As part of the process and art of learning to deal with conflicts (complaints) the local church board has agreed to the following guidelines and desires to make our church aware of the following as this will be our mode of handling complaints and conflicts in the future: Matthew 5:23-25  Therefore, if you are offering your gift at the altar and there remember that your brother has something against you, leave your gift there in front of the altar. First go and be reconciled to your brother; then come and offer your gift. Settle matters quickly with your adversary who is taking you to court. Do it while you are still with him on the way, or he may hand you over to the judge, and the judge may hand you over the officer, and you may be thrown into prison. (NIV) Matthew 18:15-17  If your brother sins against you, go and show him his fault, just between the two of you. If he listens to you, you have won your brother over. But if he will not listen, take one or two others along, so that  every matter may be established by the testimony of two or three witnesses. If he refuses to listen to them, tell it to the church; and if he refuses to listen even to the church, treat him as you would a pagan or a tax collector. (NIV) 1. We will not allow significant complaints to go unchallenged. When we assess that a complaint is more than just a congregant working through normal church changes and see that it could result in a conflict thus injuring a relationship hurting our community we will confront the issue and work to resolve the problem. We will not ignore it or treat it as insignificant or unimportant. 2. We will channel the compliant/conflict properly Before a person even gives their complaint we will direct them to take it up with the person they have the complaint against. If they are unwilling, we will let them know that as soon as they are done we will be notifying the person letting them know about the complaint with names. (There is a place for confidentiality - this is usually not one of them, if a person wants us to keep it confidential they are out of bounds with God s word, their goal is not to resolve the problem but are only looking for our support on their side.) We will not engage in negative talk or listening (giving a sympathetic ear is engagement - if ones goal is to complain without effort to resolve the situation it causes dissention within the church and is not allowed by scripture.) We will direct the complaint/conflict to it s appropriate channels - not allowing the situation to  go behind someone s back. We will not allow gossip or slander to erupt (the rumor mill is a deadly poison that has killed more than one church). 3. How we will handle conflict/complaints that are against us: We will work to come to a resolution. We will not allow the problem to go on and on. We will look for a win/win scenario if possible We will stay focused on the problem at hand not allowing other issues to invade the process We will agree that no matter what results come, we will keep our relationship in tact. If an agreement can not be made we will invite a third party to join the situation to help bring clarity and resolve. If resolution still can not be found we will agree to disagree and let the problem go. If the other party is unwilling to let it go at this point it is to be brought to the larger body (the board) and if at this point resolution can not be made the offending party will be asked to part company with the church as this seed of dissention will destroy our community. 4. Our Commitment as a local board: We will direct complaints to the appropriate channels and not allow them to go under the radar. We will not engage in complaining (either by listening, agreeing with, or passing the complaint on to other uninvolved parties) We will confront complaints and conflict and not ignore them or avoid them. We will be open and honest about our feelings, yet tactful and loving in presenting them. Our goal will always be to resolve the conflict peaceably with relationships in tact and the community strengthened.
