Our Denominational Connection

We are part of The Wesleyan Church which is a worldwide denomination structured for global outreach and evangelism.

Our church was originally part of the Methodist denomination, but during the times of the Civil War several small groups within the Methodist Church did not agree with the stand the church was taking on slavery. With many large plantation owners, the Methodist church refused to rule against slavery so many smaller groups within the church left at that time.  It was during this movement that The Wesleyan Methodist church and the Pilgrim Holiness Church were formed. The churches took a strong stand against slavery and the tobacco industry, which was a large contributor to the slave trade. We also stood opposed to the strong denominational control which led our church to be structured from the bottom up.  Instead of the bulk of the power being held by non-local bishops or denominational leaders, the majority of the power within this new structure was on the local level with each individual church having power to govern itself within certain guidelines including the authority to hire and fire their local pastors.
